Montgomery Historical Society

The Montgomery County Historical Society maintains and preserves the Lane Place Antebellum Mansion and the historic Speed Cabin, which is now included in the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Lane Place was the former home of Henry and Joanna Lane. Henry Lane began his career as a lawyer from Kentucky and opened his own law practice in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Eventually, he became extremely active in his political life and served as Congressman, Governor of Indiana, and U.S Senator. At the 1860 Republican National Convention in Chicago, Henry Lane worked tirelessly behind the scenes to secure enough delegation votes for Abraham Lincoln to be nominated for President.
